It’s a MATTER OF SCIENCE!

This week we kicked off our new science unit of MATTER by having the kids create OOBLECK and attempting to answer the question:  Is it a solid or a liquid and WHY?  Students measured out the ingredients, 1 C of corn starch, weighed it, and then added 1/2 C of water, weighing it as well.  We remembered to subtract the weight of the container and attempted to also see if we could prove the CONSERVATION OF MATTER LAW.  Turns out most of the OOBLECK solutions weighed less than the combined weight of the corn starch and water due to all the OOBLECK that ended up on people’s hands, the desks, or the floor!  We will attempt to be a bit more scientific and create the material inside a plastic bag at the end of the week to see if we can prove the CONSERVATION OF MATTER LAW.

Students:  What did you think of the lab? 🙂
